SA abstains again as key talks on staving off extinctions get under way

SA is among 17 megadiverse countries in the world because of its exceptional biodiversity, yet it has not joined almost 90 countries calling for the protection of 30% of the planet’s oceans, inland waters and land by 2030, at talks under way in Geneva.

The 30x30 target is one of the key issues under discussion by more than 190 countries at the talks, from March 14 to 29, to draft a global deal to protect habitats and species from extinction.

Nearly 200 countries are expected to approve the deal — the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework — later this year at Convention on Biological Diversity’s meeting at the COP 15 summit...
