Acing it: Cape Town centre gives teens a new lease on health
The Adolescent Centre of Excellence is a one-stop facility for 13- to 18-year-olds’ health requirements
After she was diagnosed with hormonal disorder polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) at the age of 13, Kauthar Benjamin, of Crawford in Cape Town, had to get used to hospitals, which made her even more anxious.
For the past five years she and her mother Rashieda have visited at least five clinics at Groote Schuur Hospital as part her treatment. These include dietetics and nutrition, psychiatry, gynaecology, adolescent and endocrine, and psychology services.
“That means we had to visit the hospital for at least five times or more a month. Having to be at hospital from 5.30am and sit in long queues until the afternoon has been so exhausting and mentally draining for our family, especially for my daughter, who has to do that at such a young age and miss school sometimes,” said Rashieda...
