“We expected it, but we are still shocked.”

This was the reaction of Leonie Pretorius to news that her nephew Jacques’s killer Morne Harmse had been released on parole.

In 2009 Harmse, who became known as the “samurai sword killer”, pleaded guilty in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to killing Jacques, 16, in 2008 and attempting to kill three other people. He alleged he had plotted the rampage with friends. He was sentenced to an effective 20 years’ imprisonment...
