Shortly after 7pm on Tuesday, 74-year-old Jack Gitelson’s car careened bonnet-first into a huge hole at the intersection of Long and 1st roads in Greymont, Johannesburg..

The pensioner is still reeling from the incident, which left him with “a big gash in my head, about 13 staples and an injury to my wrist”. He was avoiding a head-on collision when he plummeted into the crater.
