It’s 7 years and counting for R46m hostel revamp – and it’s still a dump

All these families want is to call the place home, but delays and thieves have destroyed their dream

The situation is so dire at Kwa-Masiza hostel in the Emfuleni municipality in Sedibeng, Gauteng, that locals have appointed themselves as security guards to stop further vandalism of the multimillion-rand renovated building.

Delays and the subsequent halting of the R46m project – dating back to 2013 – to turn the hostel into family units have left potential beneficiaries still without a home.

But while looters have made off with geysers, window frames and doors, those waiting to move in have stepped up to try to secure what is left. ..
