Liberty lashed for making cancer hell even worse

Ombud slams insurer after it made Cape Town woman on chemo feel ‘like a hypochondriac’

A cancer survivor has chalked up a victory against insurance giant Liberty which she accused of making her feel like a hypochondriac who had exaggerated her illness.

Judge Ron McLaren, the ombudsman for long-term insurance, recently ordered Liberty to pay the Western Cape woman, known only as “Ms W”, R15,000 as compensation for poor service in the handling of her income disability claim, following a double mastectomy and treatment for breast cancer.
