Gymslip moms ‘must stay out of school for six months to breastfeed’

A new study recommends that education and health unite to keep abreast of teen mothers’ needs

Gymslip mothers should remain at home for at least six months to breastfeed their babies before returning to school.

This is one of the suggestions made in a study published in the South African Medical Journal last month that looked at the return of teen mothers to school after giving birth.

Titled “When do adolescent mothers return to school? Timing across rural and urban South Africa”, authors Janina Jochim and Lucie Cluver from the UK’s Oxford University, and Allison Groves from Drexel University in the US, said basic education and health should develop a policy on teen mothers “in unison”...
