Gumede case: one fell swoop can overturn Hawks’ 100% success

The former eThekwini mayor could be a thorn in the side of the country’s fraud and corruption busters

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, has recorded a 100% conviction rate for fraud and corruption within the public sector during the 2019/20 period, up from 70% last year.

This is according to Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi. He told Times Select that of the 426 fraud and corruption cases within the public sector investigated by the specialised unit, they had secured 426 convictions.

“The DPCI conviction rate on fraud and corruption cases within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster stands at 92.72 % an improvement of 20% from last year (140 convictions from 151 cases). The conviction rate for fraud and corruption within the public sector stands at 100%, an improvement of 30% from last year (426 convictions from 426 cases). The conviction rate for fraud and corruption within the private sector stands at 98%, an improvement of 1.15 % from last year (49 convictions from 50 cases).”..
