Sewage leaks are so bad they’re even giving dogs the squibs

West Rand residents report stomach problems in children and pets as sewage flows through streets

There’s a heavy scent in the air around the Durban Deep informal area on Johannesburg’s West Rand. Raw sewage layers the ground, where stepping stones are used to save shoes from the smelly moistness.

The communities of Durban Deep, Matholesville and nearby Bramfischerville say after years of raw sewage streaming through the streets, their gardens and homes, their children has become ill with gastro infections they believe are from the overflowing pipes.

Cora Bailey, who runs Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw), an animal NPO that provides veterinary help to poor communities in the area, said the situation was so bad she was now seeing pets suffering from stomach complications...
