Covid-19 knocks wind out of Cape yacht club students’ sails

Funding shortfalls caused by Covid-19 have knocked a flagship sailing project aimed at upskilling orphans and township youths.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) this month had to turn away 14 new recruits from the programme. The students were allocated funding by the South African International Maritime Institute, which is driving skills development in the maritime industry. However, financial constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic have prompted a temporary freeze on budgetary allocations.

Though the RCYC programme continues thanks to other funding sources, the freeze on new recruits illustrates how the pandemic is harming socio-economic development, maritime sources said...
