At least historic mosque is saved as man flees blaze in only a towel

Residents count cost after fire rages through block of flats in precinct of Durban’s Grey street mosque

Ihsaan Khan stood helplessly on Denis Hurley Street’s crowded pavement in central Durban, watching as firefighters battled to contain a blaze that ripped through his flat in the precinct of the city’s most historic mosque.

At about midday on Monday, the block of flats that forms part of the Juma Masjid, or Grey Street mosque, the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere, went up in flames.
