Don’t be bullied by Zim, just help them, Cyril urged

Zim’s leaders forever howl ‘sovereignty’, but SA must weigh in on its economic and rights disaster, say experts

Analysts say SA should offer a steady hand to help Zimbabwe through a growing socio-economic crisis, even though its neighbour and trade partner seems to be in denial about the unfolding disaster on home turf.

On Thursday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced he had appointed former cabinet minister Sydney Mufamadi and former deputy president and ex-national assembly speaker Baleka Mbete as his special envoys to Zimbabwe. This, Ramaphosa said, came “following recent reports of difficulties that the Republic of Zimbabwe is experiencing”.

“The special envoys are expected to engage the government of Zimbabwe and relevant stakeholders to identify possible ways in which South Africa can assist Zimbabwe ... The president’s special envoys will leave for Zimbabwe as soon as all the arrangements are made.”..
