Covid-19’s dark clouds could have a silver lining for HIV, TB

The pandemic will drive HIV and TB deaths up in the short term, but will ultimately lead to better treatment

Covid-19 has caused huge disruptions to HIV and tuberculosis (TB) services, and people with these diseases are twice as likely to die from the coronavirus.

Conversely, according to several experts, the pandemic has presented an opportunity to rethink how we tackle HIV and TB, and the fight against Covid-19 has role-modelled some of those positives.

The lead author of a new paper in The Lancet, Claire Keene, from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), said the data show Covid-19 “could trigger an excess of six million tuberculosis deaths by 2025”...
