Serial killer lurks in our sugar cane fields, say locals after three deaths

Police are reluctant to put the deaths down to the work of a serial killer, but are investigating the possibility

Families in Mtwalume, on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast, fear there is a serial killer in their midst after the bodies of two women and a teenager were discovered in sugar cane fields in three months.

For father Jeffery Phehlukwayo, the sight of the lush fields that surround his home is too much to bear after his 25-year-old daughter, Akhona, and her friend, Nosipho, 16, were found murdered in a sugar cane field in the Mnafu area, not far from their home, on April 25. 

Their families, who are neighbours and share a surname, say the pair were last seen on March 28...
