Africa can beat Covid-19, but it’d better move now: CDC head

Boldly applying public health measures and stepping up testing are critical, warns John Nkengasong

Africa – with fewer than 5,000 Covid-19 cases in 37 of its 55 nations – can still beat the pandemic, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention director John Nkengasong said on Thursday.

“So many countries still have this opportunity,” he said, warning it will be lost if the numbers get too big.

“Africa is clearly edging towards the one million number. This is time for caution, not the time to panic and fear,” he said, urging all countries to promote the public health tools that work – masking in public, aggressive testing and tracing, the isolation of infections, and the deployment of thousands of community workers...
