Principal at special needs school challenges court ruling in favour of teachers who quit over toxic environment


Two former teachers at a Johannesburg special needs school, who resigned because of abuse from its “narcissistic” owner, did so because their continued employment was intolerable, the Johannesburg Labour Court has ruled.

“In short, what the evidence discloses is a workplace operated by a narcissistic personality whose offensive and unwelcome conduct had the effect of creating a toxic working environment in which discrimination, degradation and demeaning behaviour became the norm,” Judge Andre van Niekerk said.

The application before him was an attempt by the owner and head of the school for autistic children to overturn an earlier ruling by the CCMA that  they had been “constructively dismissed” and were deserving of financial compensation because of the “abuse and bullying”...
