Photographer close to fulfilling vow to MK cadre 38 years on

Durban man promised to give an image of the young fighter to his family if he died. Now he’s a step closer

Veteran photographer and historian Omar Badsha received a birthday gift that brought him one step closer to fulfilling a promise he made to a young ANC cadre in his tiny Durban darkroom 38 years ago.

Badsha, who was active in the liberation struggle at the time, took Stembiso Nzuza under his wing to teach him photography for a brief period before the youngster, who was part of uMkhonto we Sizwe, left for military training in 1982.

It was during his short stint that Nzuza, who lived in KwaMashu, asked Badsha to take a picture of him and made him promise to give it to his loved ones. Nzuza was killed in a shootout with apartheid police two years later and Badsha never got to fulfil that promise...
