Covid-19 is a virus that not only attacks our immune system but picks at our fraying social fabric.

The burning issue of some South African National Taxi Association (Santaco) members who ordered drivers to fill their vehicles in defiance of lockdown level 3 regulations – which only allow 70% passenger capacity – is the latest example of how the pandemic is hitting black and poor communities the hardest.

According to the department of transport, the taxi industry moves approximately 15.6 million passenger journeys on a daily basis, accounting for moving 68% or 5.4 million passengers daily...
