We’re red-lining, Cape doc warns amid Covid-19 flood
Hospital staff say they are stretched to the limit, in terms of beds and resources, and emotionally
Groote Schuur Hospital is stretched to breaking point with Covid-19 admissions and dying patients as the Western Cape moves towards the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
Doctors and nurses at the hospital are just coping with 250 to 300 coronavirus patients a day and mostly full intensive care beds.
“Almost the whole capacity of the hospital is geared over to Covid and we are just hanging in there,” said a doctor on the front line of critical care, who preferred not to be named. “We are stretched about as far as we can go.”..
