The mental burden of Covid-19 is heavier than SA can bear

While government prepares for the peak of the pandemic, the country’s mental health is also at stake

As SA builds its large hospital network to cope with the Covid-19 outbreak, it must provide hospital beds for psychiatric patients.

This is the call from the SA Society of Psychiatrists (Sasop), which is concerned about the shortage of beds for psychiatric patients in public and private hospitals as more beds are reserved for Covid-19 patients.

Sasop board member and public sector national convener Dr Kagisho Maaroganye said there was no adequate plan in place to support mental health patients during the pandemic. ..
