Rail McCoy: fired-up bidders bag trove of locomotive oddments
The prices might seem eye-watering to some, but hundreds of old loco number plates auctioned fast
Old locomotive number plates and other oddments of railway history earned their sellers a total of R1.7m at auction in Johannesburg on Saturday.
While auctioneers Old Johannesburg Warehouse, owned by former rugby player Christiaan Scholtz, estimated that 80% of the items had already been sold before the auction even began, they were not expecting Saturday’s bidding frenzy as buyers bid hard for almost every item on offer.
“It was very niche,” said auctioneer and art specialist Imre Lamprecht. “We didn’t expect everything to go.”..
