Runaway success: virtual Comrades outstrips pre-Covid race

The 2020 iteration attracted 43,000 runners, and now there’s talk about making it a regular thing


For those crazy enough to have run a race that was cancelled, congratulations, you may have sparked a brand-new Comrades Marathon. 

After a whopping 43,788 people took part in 2020’s virtual Comrades – that’s double the 21,625 in 2019’s event – the race association is considering doing something similar in the future. 

Perhaps the secret to the success of the Race the Comrades Legends event was that there were other options besides the gruelling 90km run...
