Church torched in latest twist in 3-year row over collapsing homes and excavated forests, as locals say no one is listening to them

A torched church, protection orders and backyards on the brink of collapse are part of a three-year ongoing property battle.

Residents living in Velakuqala Close, Umlazi, south of Durban have been locked in a fight with lessees who apparently paid as little as R78 a year to develop vacant Ingonyama Trust land. The residents have been trying to stop the excavation of forest behind their properties since 2017.

Two weeks ago, the battle came to head when residents confronted the operator of an excavator that had dug up land, next to a church that was built by a local principal Jetro Mncwabe, who had leased land from the trust...
