Wedded to distancing: venues dump the old for the new

Social distancing has forced wedding venue planners to think outside the box, literally


When the national lockdown hit and events venues took a knock, a  family friend joked to KwaZulu-Natal wedding venue owner Wayne Hulett that he would have to turn to drive-through weddings to keep the business afloat.

But the joke has become reality for Hulett, who is now offering drive-in weddings at Collisheen Estate, where couples say “I do” as their wedding guests watch the ceremony from their cars while being served bubbly and canapés.

“I didn’t take it too seriously at the time, but after four weeks of lockdown, I started investigating the possibilities and then saw a video on YouTube of a wedding in the US, and it looked so simple and extremely ‘social distancing friendly’,” said Hulett...
