Retshidisitswe Kotane’s curiosity about her great-grandmother’s swollen feet sparked a passion for medicine. Now the doctor, 25, is on the frontline of SA’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
After completing her Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice studies at Wits University’s Medical School, Kotane couldn’t pay her R95,000 debt, which meant she couldn’t get the certificate needed to register with the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) so she could get a job.
With the help of the Feenix crowdfunding platform and the Standard Bank Tutuwa Community Foundation, her debt was paid and she now works at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)...
