The Constitutional Court has ordered a complete makeover of SA’s voting system, saying independent candidates should be allowed to contest national and provincial elections.

In a landmark judgment handed down on Thursday, the highest court in the land declared the Electoral Act unconstitutional, a decision that could be a game changer for SA’s political landscape.

Now parliament must ensure that there is adequate public consultation and participation in determining the most appropriate electoral system for SA – and it has 24 months to do so...
