Racism claims swirl as private school and landlord face off

Vine College fell behind with its rent, so its landlord welded the gates. Now he is threatening to evict the school

In the frenzy to get schools ready to receive pupils this week, a private Johannesburg college rushed to court to settle an impasse with its landlord, who is accused of calling black pupils, teachers and visitors “monkeys” and “baboons”.

Vine College, in La Rochelle, had its gates welded shut by landlord Brandon Zackey during the first phase of lockdown, announced in March.

In court papers challenging the lockout, principal Thembisa Baleni accused Zackey and an unnamed employee of regularly visiting the school and denigrating staff and pupils, likening them to primates...
