Be very careful who you parole, begs murdered girl’s mom

Carmen van Wyk, whose child was allegedly killed by a parolee, has warned the government to screen prisoners before releasing them en masse in a bid stop the spread of Covid-19 behind bars.

Van Wyk’s eight-year-old daughter, Tazne, disappeared on February 7 on her way to a tuck shop close to her home in Elsies River, Cape Town. Two weeks later, she was found dead in a stormwater drain about 100km away. Moyhdian Pangarker, 54, was arrested in connection with the murder and kidnapping.

In another case, also in the Western Cape, parolee Jakobus Petoors, 58, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping, rape and murder of eight-year-old Reagan Gertse in Tulbagh...
