‘Out of this world’: SA’s newest fighter pilots were born to soar

While most people were grappling with life under level 4 lockdown two men were suiting up to break the sound barrier.

Maj Jerry “Cyrax” Mabona, 32, and Captain Klyde “Ronin” Naidoo, 27, became SA’s newest fighter pilots when they underwent solo flights in the supersonic Gripen on May 4 and 5 respectively.

The two, who are based at the Air Force Base Makhado, racked up hundreds of hours of basic military training, air and surface warfare training, flight simulation and flying time before taking to the skies in the  Swedish-made aircraft...
