Rough justice: prosecutors’ blaps forces judge to rule for ‘rhino poacher’

Courts must uphold the law, even if their decisions seem unjust, says judge

The national director of public prosecutions (NDPP) has been hauled over the coals by a judge for attempting to ride roughshod over court processes.

Acting judge Henk Roelofse took the unusual step of starting a technical judgment with a summary, which he said he hoped would head off outrage over his decision in favour of an alleged rhino poacher.

The Mpumalanga high court judge said: “Ordinary people may want to know, without needing to go through the entire judgment, why I gave an order that goes against all which society may perceive to be deserving or just.”..
