Nkululeko Msongelwa was minding his own business at a tavern with his girlfriend when police arrived and forced them to stand with their hands against a wall.

It was the start of a 158-day ordeal that included being arrested, shot, chained to a hospital bed and locked up, and which has ended almost nine years later with damages awards totalling R7.5m.

Lawyers for the minister of police did not put up a fight in the Mthatha High Court, conceding that the way police treated Msongelwa in 2011 was “despicable”...
