Life comes to a standstill, except in the toilet roll aisle

As outside areas stand near-deserted, supermarkets and online shopping sites battle to cope with panic buying

Empty shelves along supermarket aisles have revealed products we might soon realise we were taking for granted.

Rice, dried peas, beans and lentils – and nearly all cheap canned goods – seemed to be the first products to go as shoppers prepared for possible shortages linked to coronavirus.

Toilet paper was one of the first products to disappear and personal cleaning products with certain brand names also flew off shelves on Monday...
