Animal cruelty at zoo, or just political vultures circling?

Free State government says it has to close Bloemfontein Zoo, but some claim there’s a hidden motive

The Free State government says “non-compliance” led to the shutting down of the Bloemfontein Zoo where five animals are reported to have died of hunger.

Kgotoso Tau, spokesperson for the provincial department of economic, small business development, tourism and environmental affairs (Destea), told Times Select the animals were moved to alternative places of care in Bloemfontein.

He said the zoo belonged to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality and its role was restricted to “the provision of environment and biodiversity management services to ensure the preservation of the natural environment”.  ..
