Jeppe High governing body member quits over ‘racial politics’

He claims the top school is ‘obsessed with race’, while his son faces a disciplinary hearing over a racial slur

A senior school governing body member at a top government high school in Johannesburg has stoked racial tensions after claiming white pupils and staff are being overlooked because of their race.

In his resignation letter, the Jeppe High School for Boys SGB member says the school’s 130-year legacy is being tainted by racial politics.

“I ask myself constantly why is the colour of skin the defining factor for our school’s measures of success? Why have we replaced ‘the best’ with ‘black’ or ‘of colour’: ‘We need to get more black staff’ – why not the best staff; ‘more people of colour onto the SGB’ – why not the best people? Why is it a problem getting a white boy onto a funded scholarship? Why can’t it just be the deserving boy?” he continued...
