Gauteng vows to create 35,000 new jobs, but is that enough?

Province’s budget thinks big, with R36.7bn set aside for infrastructure development alone

The Gauteng provincial government has set aside R36.7bn for infrastructure development and creating more than 35,000 jobs in the next three years, Gauteng finance MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said.

Delivering the province’s R142bn budget on Thursday, Nkomo-Ralehoko said infrastructure was a fundamental enabler towards the delivery of services, the creation of sustainable job opportunities and economic development and growth.

During the province’s midterm budget speech, Nkomo-Ralehoko said R250m of its infrastructure budget had been returned to national Treasury because of projects that were not ready for implementation...
