Lucky Soka allegedly threatened the state’s star witness – a neighbour who witnessed his abuse of the toddler


The man accused of killing his mentally disabled girlfriend’s two-year-old child and then threatening a key witness in his murder trial has been taken into custody after the Johannesburg High Court ruled that his release on warning be revoked.

Robert Lucky Soka was charged for the murder of Michael Moletsane after the child died in January 2018, having allegedly suffered abuse throughout the last few months of his short life. In one incident he was allegedly waterboarded.

While Michael’s mother, Lerato, was initially charged alongside Soka, she pleaded guilty to her role in the child’s death, placing the blame on Soka. She received a wholly suspended sentence in November 2019. She wasn’t given any jail time because the presiding judge believed she was remorseful, and that her mental age of about 14 years should be considered a mitigating factor...
