‘Bad eggs, urine’: mushroom farmer not a fun guy for nauseated neighbours

High court orders farmer to stop making compost after neighbours complain of terrible odours for 10 years


A four-year legal battle over a smelly neighbour with questionable “morels” that grew out of control has finally come to an end, not leaving much room for an appeal.

Three judges at the Western Cape High Court have told mushroom farmer Johannes Jacobs he can no longer make his own compost at his De Doorns farm, after a decade of complaints from his neighbours about sinus attacks and nausea because of the horrendous smell.

The ruling over the “odour complaint” was made after a team of experts was able to determine just how badly the farm stank, with the high court judges agreeing the quality of the grape-farming neighbours’ lives was suffering...
