Animal welfare wars: Facebook spat turns into hefty legal dispute

What started out as a bit of water up the bum has ended in a R500k lawsuit

The Owl Rescue Centre may have to pay a hefty price for accusing the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital of gross negligence and disinterest in animal welfare.  

The two Gauteng wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centres began their public spat on Facebook over a squirt of water to a raptor’s derrière by Owl Rescue Centre founder Brendan Murray. 

Now the wildlife vets are suing the Owl Rescue Centre R500,000 for defamation for a Facebook post in which Murray accuses the veterinary hospital of gross negligence. ..
