Sorry, says judge after spate of SA children killed by parolees

Head of the parole review board takes responsibility for the deaths as minister announces reforms to system

Judge Siraj Desai, the chairperson of the parole review board, has apologised to South Africans for the deaths of two Western Cape children who were allegedly killed by parolees.

Desai addressed the media alongside justice and correctional services minister Ronald Lamola at the Goodwood Correctional Centre on Wednesday. He admitted that “most” parole boards were not fully functional.

But, he added, the parole system was an effective way of managing the overflowing prisons system – and it would cost about R1bn to build a new prison...
