Despite disaster, young canoeist refuses to let her dreams float away

Star Soweto canoeist, 14, suffered smashed hip and legs after she was knocked down by a car

On the weekend 14-year-old canoeist Sne Ntombela had her best race and qualified to represent Gauteng at the SA canoeing championships, a tragedy struck that might leave her unable to compete.

Sne and her team had just finished packing away their canoes at their clubhouse in Power Park in Soweto when a car veered off the road and crashed into her. She suffered a shattered hip and broken legs, and underwent several surgeries to pin her hip back.

“This year on the same weekend as the incident she was at her best. She made the Gauteng team and was chosen to go represent the province at a SA canoeing championship. She has worked hard for it; she tried to do her best, and now this has happened,” said Sne’s coach Nkosi Mzolo...
