But nobody minds since there’s no need to haul out the mower when the animals eat up to 60kg a night

Residents of the KwaZulu-Natal town of St Lucia rarely have to pay for garden services.

Thanks to a casual “symbiotic” relationship with the hippos of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, of which the town is part, the townsfolk’s grass feeds the huge herbivores and in return they get almost perfectly manicured lawns.

The hefty herbivores were thrust into the spotlight after a 30-second video of a hippo lumbering into a local service station in the town on Sunday night went viral...
