We look at the court papers to find out why the judge gave Lerato Moletsane only a suspended sentence


The mentally disabled mother of slain two-year-old Michael Moletsane has pleaded guilty to her role in the child’s torturous death, though she has avoided a prison sentence as the state continues its prosecution of her lover.

Lerato Moletsane and Robert Lucky Soka were initially charged together after the child died in January 2018, having allegedly suffered abuse throughout the last few months of his short life and, in one particular incident, was allegedly waterboarded by Soka.

According to the state’s charge sheet, the child was, on numerous occasions, punched, head-butted, kicked, thrown to the ground, strangled, dragged under a tap and forced face-first into the running water. The cause of death is listed as a result of “multiple blunt-force injuries”...
