Thrifty car guard turns coins into a cab to fulfil Uber dream

He scrimped for five years. Now when he runs into old customers he tells them their coins got him where he is

For five years Omar Ndayishimiye stood in the parking lot of the Steenberg Village shopping centre near Tokai, dutifully watching the cars that came and went.

“Car guarding is hard work. You need to endure and persevere. In rain or shine, no matter the wind or the heat, you need to stand there,” he said.

The Rwandan – who came to SA as a refugee in 2003 – would tuck his tips into his pocket and, at the end of every day, the 39-year-old would squirrel them into a bag he kept under his bed...
