Kolisi is more than happy that SA – and Madiba – have his back

Having won the Laureus World Team of the Year award, the Bok captain reflects on his past ... and his future

It is more than three months since Siya Kolisi has been able to enjoy an undisturbed meal out in SA. Rugby players are always celebrities in this sport-obsessed country, but World Cup-winning captains are on a different level entirely, and it has reached the point where Kolisi’s wife, Rachel, requests that restaurant managers ask fans to wait until the family have finished dining before posing for the obligatory pictures.

Kolisi reveals all this without a trace of bitterness – not just because he understands what last November’s World Cup victory means to his country, but because he too played the role of starry-eyed selfie-hunter just a couple of weeks after that epic win over England in Yokohama.

“We were having a meal in Cape Town and I saw Mr Jurgen Klopp having a meal,” he recalls, laughing. “As soon as I saw him I asked for a photo.”..
