Lawyers behaving badly rapped for ‘serial negligence’

Judge slaps punitive costs on firm hired by minister over their shoddy handling of an arbitration review

A firm of attorneys employed by the water and sanitation minister will pay heavily for what a judge called its “serial negligence”.

On Friday, Koikanyang Inc, of Sandton in Johannesburg, was ordered to pay the costs of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union and its member, Olipa Maseko, who works for the minister.

Johannesburg Labour Court acting judge Stephen Hardie also advised the minister to consider recovering the fees paid to Koikanyang and sent a copy of his judgment to the Legal Practice Council...
