State vows to fight R3.5bn hospital violence epidemic

Health department reports 338 cases of violence at state health institutions with by far the most in the Cape

Health minister Zweli Mkhize has made an urgent call on provincial health departments to develop plans to deal with the dangerous conditions in hospitals.

This comes as the department reported 338 cases of violence at state health institutions last year, the latest incident being the murder of Sibongile Nkhwashu, 24, an intern doctor at Manweng Hospital in Polokwane, Limpopo. Her boyfriend was arrested in connection with her death.
