What an EFF-up: Cyril’s Sona swamped by the ructions beforehand

It will be Malema’s unprecedented antics, not Ramaphosa’s pledges that go down in history

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s state of the nation address was for the first time delayed by more than an hour as EFF MPs demanded the axing of Pravin Gordhan and the removal of FW de Klerk from parliament.

In a move reminiscent of the Jacob Zuma-era parliament, EFF leader Julius Malema led his 44-member caucus in disrupting Ramaphosa’s Sona as they refused to allow him to deliver his speech until he fired his public enterprises minister.

Malema and his MPs also wanted parliament’s presiding officers, national assembly speaker Thandi Modise and NCOP chair Amos Masondo, to ask De Klerk to leave parliament...
