In his inaugural speech as chairperson of the African Union, President Cyril Ramaphosa took on his US counterpart Donald Trump, rejecting his peace plan for Palestine and Israel as a “Bantustan construct”.

Ramaphosa went as far as departing from his prepared speech to the AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, telling the meeting of continental leaders that Trump’s plan – which the US leader himself called the “deal of the century” – should be denounced.
