NPA has a beef with Mandrax accused’s cattle

Asset Forfeiture Unit wants to seize them, but owner says they’re not ill-gotten gains


Seizing anything from a brothel to swimsuits is not unusual for the Asset Forfeiture Unit – as long as they can prove they were bought with the proceeds of crime.

Now 300 heads of cattle belonging to East London businessman Simphiwe Qwememe are in the unit’s crosshairs, as he stands accused of masterminding a Mandrax drug-trafficking ring.

But there is a snag. According to the unit, they’ve had to return some of the cattle to other farmers in the area after they were able to prove the cows had been stolen...
