Airline pilot’s Cape2Rio gesture sparks consternation over ‘mysterious lights’ with an ‘otherworldly quality’

An SAA pilot who flashed his landing lights at a fleet of yachts crossing the Atlantic unwittingly caused a midnight UFO incident during the Cape2Rio2020 race.

First officer Richard Button, a keen sailor, turned on landing and wing lights when he crossed the fleet’s path at 39,000ft during an Airbus flight between Brazil and Johannesburg last weekend.

The gesture caused consternation aboard the 102ft superyacht Almagores II, where a startled helmsman told the rest of his Italian crew about mysterious lights which seemed to have an otherworldly quality...
